hop aboard the PhotoTrain

personal, one-on-one photography mentoring and classes

I hear it all the time:

"There's something wrong with this camera, it sucks!"
"Why don't my pictures come out?"
"Can you show me how to work this thing?"
"These shots are all blurry!"
"Why don't my photographs look like yours?"

And on and on and on. You've probably said something along those lines yourself at some point or another. I know the frustration all too well myself, as I went through all of that when I first started out in photography. It can be enough to make you want to throw your camera into murky depths of the Long Island Sound. There are so many people who are afraid of even going near their cameras, or simply rely on 'AUTO', press the button and hope for the best.

The truth of the matter is that the problem is almost always not your camera, but - brace yourself and don't hate me - YOU.

There is hope however - Hallelujah! A little guidance – a little handholding. Someone to point you in the right direction, to help discover your strengths and weaknesses. You can bring the joy and excitement back into your photography. I've been a photographer since 1985, and there is simply no substitution for knowing how to get your camera to do what you'd like it to.

Whatever type of camera you own, even an iPhone, is simply just a tool at your disposal - but understanding the 'how's and whys' makes all the difference in the world. I'll teach you how to see light, angles and composition. I can also teach you Lightroom or Photoshop if you're more advanced.

I can also teach you how to make pasta from scratch, but that's another class.

that’s where PhotoTrain comes in

Group classes or school can be great but may not give you the personal attention you desire, and you may feel weird asking questions you think are 'stupid' (obviously no such thing, by the way). Everyone I instruct are at far different skill levels & don't all require the same degree of assistance. You may need some help with simple camera basics, advanced exposure and composition or even Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom to get your images the way you hope they would look.

The idea behind PhotoTrain is simple - figure out what kind of help you need and give it to you. This may mean any combination of photo basics, real world shooting, one on one camera instruction, or a few hours spent in front of the computer.

I'll discuss with you in advance want you feel you want to accomplish and then determine the best way to accomplish your goals, whether it's you camera, Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom.

Before we find a mutually agreeable day for your session, we'll discuss what you feel you need to work on and decide how we will spend our time. What we do is really up to you!

The only requirements are that you have some sort of digital camera (preferably one with a manual function) and a desire to learn and have fun!
